Rishabh Pant’s remarkable attack, on the England team, on the first day of the Edgbaston Test received plenty of praise from around the world. Ex-cricketer Mohammad Asif, however, was not thrilled with the strike.
Through his trademark Twitter video, the Pakistani pacer blamed the big score on England and its inept handling of the game.
“It was entirely the fault of the England bowlers, as Pant did not work miracles. He has technical faults. His left arm doesn’t work, but he still managed to score a century because the England bowlers didn’t play him in his weak areas,” Asif remarked.
And after India lost 98/5 and took the field, Pant came out in the middle of the game. He immediately took over the game and capitalized on England’s decision to introduce Jack Leach into the attack. The batsman goalkeeper selflessly struck a spinner, covering three sixes and eight boundaries.
“I won’t name specific people, but England made a lot of mistakes. When Jadeja and Pant were batting, they put a left-handed spinner in the game, which was not the ideal bowling option at the time,” he explained.
“I don’t mind Pant, but with those kinds of decisions by your opponent, you get the advantage to score the big ball.”
And this isn’t the first time Asif has had to make conflicting assessments about an Indian player. In the past and the past couple of years, he has talked about Kohli being a lower-handed player while at the same time arguing that the former captain’s downfall will come soon enough when his physicality wears off. Kohli hasn’t hit a century in more than two years. He was once again caught short-handed in a match against England, prompting Asif to double down on his statement.
“I pointed out Kohli’s technical fault a couple of years ago, but people started judging me. Today (Friday) he hasn’t hit a century in a long time. I like watching Kohli, and even he is a bigger player than I am. But technically he needs to work harder,” he believes.
