The IPL auction, held in Chennai, is scheduled to start on February 18, 2021. A total of 292 players will participate there. Why will England’s Test captain Joe Root be absent from it for the third following year?

Why will England’s Test captain Joe Root be absent from it for the third following year?

“It’s a callous decision. I do want to be part of another IPL season”

Always among the participants, along with, for example, Jason Roy, Mark Wood, and Moeen Ali, you could find Joe Root, England’s Test captain. However, for the third year in a row, he announced he wouldn’t take part. This year he stated it on Friday, February 12. In a short interview, Root explained that missing out on the profitable IPL auction for the third consecutive year was a tough decision, especially given the national team’s busy schedule this year. Notably, he scored a full 218 runs in the match to lead England to a massive 227-run victory in the series opener.

With England aiming for the only available place in the first final, they are trying not to miss any chance. If the team wins the remaining three Tests to be played in India, it will qualify them for the WTC finals. There they will play against New Zealand. By the way, the ICC World Test Championship itself will be held at the Lord’s Stadium from June 18-22.

“With the measure of Test cricket we have this year, I didn’t feel it was the right time to put all my energy into it. I’m just simply not sure it’s worth it. Hopefully, next year there will be more opportunities to be part of the IPL. Or at least participate in the auction”.

"It's a callous decision. I do want to be part of another IPL season"

Despite winning the series opener with confidence, Root said he was well aware of his team’s challenge when talking about the second Test.

“Of course, it presents a tough challenge. However, we have shown great cricket, and we will be very confident this week. But we won’t get ahead of ourselves. In any case, I think we are well aware of how much work it will take to win in these conditions and what we will need in this Test”.

In the second innings of the first Test, Indian skipper Virat Kohli took the lead with his stunning 72-run total. Root revealed he would definitely score runs at some point in the series, though England has their own Kohli plans.

Root revealed that to get rid of him, Bessy or Dom Bess produced a glorious delivery in the first innings. In his opinion, his team should try to increase the pressure on him step by step. Everyone knows Bessy is one of the best players in the world. However, his team doesn’t want to accept that, trying desperately to prove a point this week.

Joe was also very impressed with the way his team implemented the game plan in the first Test. He happily shared they managed to get the first big innings they often talk about. With the talent and desire to perform excellently, Root and his team believe that all this will help them win this series.

As for England, the situation is as follows. Striking bowler Jofra Archer has suffered a moderately severe elbow injury, which will require him to miss the games. However, that automatically makes Ben Stokes’ role with the ball that much more critical.

“He’s in great form, and he can do everything. We can be quite confident about him as we know him well. Yes, he made mistakes at times in the last game. However, the more he gets into the series, the more he will ask for the ball and take his shots”, said Root.

England has also left out player James Anderson despite James putting in an only heroic effort in the first Test. However, the captain said it gives the 38-year-old veteran a chance to come back fresh in the final two Tests in Ahmedabad.

“We want to give Andersen a chance to be at his best in the last two games because all his power will come in handy there. Understandably, everyone wanted to see him in this game, but you don’t look at the bigger picture. It will be a huge advantage for us as a team if he retains his strength for two of the last three games”, concluded the skipper.
