The points system for the Inter-Provincial 50 Over Trophy is as follows:
- Win: 4 points;
- Tie or No result: 2 points;
- Loss: 0 points;
- Bonus point: 1 point awarded to a team that wins a match with a run rate 1.25 times higher than that of the losing team.
History of Inter-Provincial 50 Over Trophy
Impressed by their strong performances in international events, especially in the World Cup, Ireland’s Cricket board, Cricket Ireland, gained the confidence to seek test match status from the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, they faced a significant hurdle in their bid as Ireland lacked the necessary domestic first-class infrastructure to host cricket matches. In response, Cricket Ireland made a crucial announcement, outlining their ambitious plan to establish first-class infrastructure by 2015, with the ultimate goal of achieving test status by 2020. This move aimed to prevent their talented emerging players from migrating to England, where better opportunities awaited them.
To support their endeavor, Cricket Ireland secured vital funding of $1.5 million from the ICC in December 2012. This financial boost played a crucial role in kick starting their own elite cricket competitions, paving the way for the growth and development of cricket in Ireland.

Inter-Provincial 50 Over Trophy Teams
Leinster Lightning
The Leinster Lightning is a prominent first-class team participating in the Inter-Provincial Cup. They have been a consistent presence in the competition since its revival in 2013, representing Cricket Leinster, which marked its centenary in 2019. Led by their current head coach, Nigel Jones, the Lightning has been an undeniable powerhouse in Irish domestic cricket, claiming an impressive 20 out of the 23 trophies available since 2013. Notably, they achieved a remarkable feat by securing six consecutive titles in the 50-over trophy from 2014 to 2019. However, despite their historical success, the Leinster Lightning faced tougher competition in 2022 and finished in the third position in the standings.
Northern Knights
The Northern Knights are a highly regarded first-class provincial cricket team in Ireland, representing the Northern Cricket Union of Ireland, which covers a significant portion of eastern and southern Ulster, along with parts of western Ulster. They hold the distinction of being the inaugural champions of the Inter-Provincial 50 Over Trophy, claiming the title in 2013. However, despite their early success, they have not managed to secure another championship since then. In the 2022 season, the Northern Knights faced challenges, and unfortunately, they finished at the bottom of the standings among the four competing teams.
North West Warriors
The North West Warriors are a first-class provincial cricket team representing the western region of Ulster, which encompasses areas from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Managed by the North West of Ireland Cricket Union, they have been competing fiercely in the series since its inception in 2013 but have yet to claim a championship title. Despite this, the 2022 season proved to be a defining moment for the North West Warriors, as they showcased their potential and skill, finishing as the runners-up in the competition.
Munster Reds
Munster Reds, an inter-provincial cricket team hailing from Cork, represents the province of Munster in Ireland. In April 2017, Cricket Ireland approved their participation in the prestigious Interprovincial Twenty20 Cup, the highest level of T20 domestic cricket in the country. Making their debut in the Inter-Provincial Trophy in 2017, Munster Reds achieved their first victory against North West Warriors on 6th July 2018. Following their successful 2018 season, there were discussions about including Munster Reds in the Interprovincial One-Day Trophy. In February 2021, Cricket Ireland announced that Munster Reds would participate in the 2021 tournament. Their fortunes soared when they secured their first Inter-Provincial title during the 2022 season, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing journey.
