About World Cricket League

The league’s main objectives were twofold: firstly, to provide associate members with a qualification pathway to the Cricket World Cup, and secondly, to enable national teams to compete in one-day international matches against each other.

Inaugurated in 2007, the teams were placed into divisions based on their performance in the qualification tournaments for the 2007 World Cup. The initial Division One comprised the six teams that qualified for the 2007 World Cup. Over time, the league expanded to accommodate eight divisions.

Until 2019, the WCL served as the gateway for teams aspiring to reach the Cricket World Cup. However, after the conclusion of the 2019 Division Two tournament, the WCL was succeeded by two new competitions: the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. To determine the placement of teams in these new leagues, the final rankings from the WCL were utilised.

Structure of World Cricket League

The tournament adopts a traditional round robin format, ensuring that each team competes against all the other teams during the event. The World Cricket League featured a total of 18 matches, with 15 being part of the league stage and the remaining three comprising the playoffs, including two semi-finals and a final.

Points Structure:

  • Win – 2 points;
  • Loss – 0 points;
  • No Result – 1 point.

History of World Cricket League

The inaugural league was launched in 2007, featuring seven tournaments across five global divisions, classified according to previous world rankings. By 2010, the league expanded to include eight separate divisions. In the initial cycle, the number of teams in each tournament ranged from six to twelve. However, the second cycle introduced a standardized format, with six teams participating in each tournament, except for Division 8, which had eight teams.

In 2015, the number of divisions was once again reduced to five. At the conclusion of most divisions, two teams were promoted, two were relegated, and two retained their positions for the subsequent edition, usually scheduled two years later. After each cycle, a World Cup Qualifier was held. In 2018, this qualifier involved the four lowest-ranked teams holding “Full” (senior) status, along with six “Associate” nations. The latter consisted of the four teams from Division One and the top two teams from Division Two. The two teams finishing at the bottom of that World Cup Qualifier lost their ODI status and were relegated to Division Two.

The International Cricket Council’s five development regions (Africa, Americas, Asia, East Asia-Pacific, and Europe) manage regional tournaments, serving as qualifiers for the lowest division of the World League.
