Lesson 1. Different Sports Betting Types Explained

Sports betting has undergone a long evolutionary path. From the simple question of “who will win” at the village fair to singles, parlays, and handicaps in bookmakers’ offices. The emergence of online bookmakers has made it possible to place bets at any time of the day, from anywhere with internet access. However, before diving into the exciting world of betting, it is advisable to learn more about what they represent. It is also important to become familiar with specific terminology.

Single Bets

The most common type of bet among novice players due to its simplicity. The following types of bets fall into this category:

Single Bet

A bet is placed on a single event: a match, a game, a competition, etc. The calculation of winnings for a single bet is done by multiplying the bet amount by the odds. Depending on the type of sport and the nature of the competition, the outcome can be a win, a draw, a victory in the competition (first place), etc. However, there is always only one possible outcome.

Double Chance

This type of bet is also considered a single bet because it considers the outcome of only one event. However, unlike a single bet, this wager takes into account two possible outcomes. For example, the victory of each team, the victory of one team, or a draw, etc. However, the odds for winning this type of bet are much lower than for a single bet on the same event.

Handicap (Head-start)

Used when one participant in a sporting event has an obvious advantage. That is, no one doubts their victory, so everyone will bet on them. To even the odds, bookmakers offer a handicap — a certain number of points given to the underdog. The game’s outcome is calculated based on this value. A variation of the handicap is the “Asian handicap,” which operates not with whole points, but with fractions such as 0.25, 0.5, etc. Usually, such handicaps are given for matches with a large number of points — basketball, volleyball, hockey. This type of bet is less predictable, so the odds for the Asian handicap are slightly higher.

Total

A bet that considers the total number of points or goals scored in a match. The bookmaker offers a specific value of points/goals in the match, and the player, when placing the bet, chooses whether the actual score will exceed or be less than this value.

Total with Asian Handicap. The most complex type of single bet, where one must consider not only the score but also the handicap coefficient.

Multiple Bets

These bets are further divided into simple, which include parlays and systems, and complex.

Parlay

A bet that requires considering the outcome of more than two events. To win, all events included in the parlay must have a positive outcome according to the placed bet. The probability of a positive outcome for a parlay decreases proportionally to the number of events, while the coefficient increases. Bookmakers often offer parlays across different sports, making it more challenging to analyze information. Parlays are popular among both experienced bettors, who deal with large volumes of information, and beginners, who are enticed by the higher coefficients.

System

A system consists of several parlays combined with outcome options. For example, “three out of four,” “four out of six,” and so on. This means that the system includes four parlays, and the bet is considered successful if the prediction is correct for at least three of them. The coefficient directly depends on both the complexity of the parlay itself and their number.

Complex Multiples

This type of bet is the most challenging to analyze. To win, you need to predict the outcome of several different selections across various types of sports events. For example, a complex bet type like the “Patent” includes seven bets across three sports events. These bets consist of four parlays with different numbers of events and three singles.

Additional and Special Bets

The lineup for an event may include additional and special bets depending on the type of sport.

  • Correct Score: This is a very popular bet for sports like football, tennis, volleyball, and some others with a limited number of points;
  • Period, Half, or Other Part of the Match: These bets can be applied in sports competitions where time is limited and divided into several periods;
  • First Goal Scorer: Primarily used in football, though recently, such bets have become popular in hockey as well;
  • Events of the First Minute of the Match: Mostly used in football, Bookmakers offer options to predict events such as corner kicks, yellow cards, or goals scored in the first minutes of the match.

In Conclusion

The information provided above is the foundation for successful betting on sports. Without it, mastering the technical aspects of betting is impossible, and players may make mistakes or fail to utilize all the opportunities offered by the bookmaker.
