Structure of Asia Cup 2024

After the Asian Cricket Council was downsized by the ICC in 2015, it was announced that Asia Cup tournaments will be played on rotation basis in ODI and T20I format. This year (2023), the championship will be played in the 50-over format. The six participating teams are divided into two groups, A & B. Each team will play a game against others in their respective group after which the top two from each group are promoted to the Super Four. A knock-out basis determines the finalists whereas the losing team contests for the 3rd place. The game between the final two teams is crowned as the Asian cricket champions.

History of Asia Cup

The inaugural Asia Cup took place in 1984, hosted in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, which was the headquarters of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) until 1995. India, under skipper Sunil Gavaskar, won the inaugural edition held in the UAE. The series was played in a round-robin format with Pakistan and Sri Lanka taking part as well.

In an effort to establish a more consistent schedule, the ACC announced in 2009 that the Asia Cup would be held biennially from that point forward. Moreover, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has bestowed official One Day International (ODI) status to all matches played within the Asia Cup, adding significance to the tournament and recognizing it as a platform for top-level cricketing competition.

After downsizing the Asian Cricket Council in 2015, it was announced by the ICC that Asia Cup events from 2016 would be played on a rotation basis between One Day International and Twenty20 International format, on the basis of the format of upcoming world events. As a result, the 2016 event was the first event played in the T20I format and functioned as a preparatory tournament ahead of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20.

Asia Cup 2024 Teams

The upcoming ACC Asia Cup will witness the participation of the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council and the recent ACC Men’s Premier Cup winners, Nepal. The teams taking part in the Asia Cup 2023 are:

Afghanistan

Afghanistan made its debut in the Asia Cup in the 2014 edition. The 2014 Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh, and Afghanistan participated as an associate member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Since then, they have been regular participants in the tournament as one of the full members of the ACC.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh entered the tournament in 1986. This was the same year when India boycotted the tournament due to strained cricketing relations with Sri Lanka. Bangladesh never won the title but were the runners up on three occasions.

India

India is the most accomplished team in Asia. India won the inaugural season of the Asia Cup under the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar. They have won the title seven times, including the 2018 season.

Nepal

Nepal will be accompanying these established teams who earned their spot in the tournament by emerging victorious in the 2023 ACC Men’s Premier Cup. This marks a significant milestone for Nepal as they will be making their debut in the prestigious ACC Asia Cup, having qualified for the very first time.

Pakistan

Pakistan are one of the strongest contenders for the Asia Cup. They have grabbed two title victories and were the runners up on three occasions.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka are the reigning champions of the Asia Cup. They won the finals against Pakistan by 23 runs to win to be crowned as the champions of Asia for the 6th time.
