About Women’s Premier League

Drawing inspiration from the highly popular Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the world’s most acclaimed T20 tournaments, the Women’s Premier League is administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Its inaugural season took place in March 2023, featuring five competing teams.

Structure of Women’s Premier League

The league’s structure mirrors that of the Indian Premier League. Currently, there are five teams, and in a double round-robin format, each team competes against the others. The three teams with the highest rankings at the conclusion of the group stage secure berths in the knockouts or playoffs. The board has plans to expand the league by adding more teams and matches if the inaugural tournament proves successful.

The first season of the league took place from 4th March 2023 to 26th March 2023. A total of 22 matches were held at the Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Notably, women attending the first season were granted free tickets to the matches.

Points Structure:

  • Win – 2 points;
  • Loss – 1 point;
  • Tie – 0 points.

History of Women’s Premier League

In 2022, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI, expressed the BCCI’s keenness to launch a women’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s prominent men’s T20 franchise cricket tournament. The aim was to replace the Women’s T20 Challenge. Following discussions, it was decided in October 2022 that the tournament would involve five teams and was tentatively scheduled to kick off in March 2023. Originally referred to as the Women’s Indian Premier League, it was later rebranded as the Women’s Premier League.

On 28th January 2023, the BCCI conducted bids for the league’s title sponsor rights until 2027. Tata Group secured the bid and became the official title sponsor for the event, adding to their sponsorship of the IPL as well. The competition’s first edition witnessed the Mumbai Indians Women emerge as the inaugural champions, triumphing over the Delhi Capitals Women in an exciting final to lift the trophy.
