Ahead of the first match in the upcoming Asian Cup, India received a major blow after head coach Rahul Dravid was confirmed to have a new coronavirus. The cricketers were scheduled to travel to an international tournament in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday to prepare for their opening match against Pakistan on Aug. 28 at the Dubai International Stadium.
“India head coach Rahul Dravid tests positive for COVID-19 and not travelling for Asia Cup to Dubai,” BCCI sources told news agency PTI on Tuesday.
In Zimbabwe, Dravid withdrew from the recently concluded three-match ODI series to avoid facing UAE opponents. Also, only two players from the T20I squad were present on the tour to Africa. So batting coach Vikram Rathur and bowling instructor Paras Mhambri also got a rest. The president of the National Cricket Academy, VV. Laxman was appointed interim coach, and the renowned Irish batsman performed brilliantly in the absence of Cricket Academy head Vladimir Laxman.
Of course, Laxman will ask to replace Dravid again, as there are no other options at the moment, but the tournament starts in just four days. But the BCCI is not yet reporting on this one.
Rohit Sharma’s Blue team is in the pool with arch-rivals Pakistan in the ACC competition, and one from Kuwait, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UAE will join them for the Super Four.
