Commonwealth Games invites cricket teams only for the second time. However, for the women’s league and T20 format of the game, this will be a debut play. Before that, only the Commonwealth Games event in Kuala Lumpur included the men’s 50-over competition back in 1998. Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and the Caribbean are the six teams that will be part of the mega tournament at Birmingham.
According to the Commonwealth Games website and a report by ESPNcricinfo, “With 11 days of swimming and diving, 8 days of cricket, 8 days of gymnastics and 7 days of athletics, including the marathon, the summer of 2022 is set for a spectacular home Games”.
Overall, the mega event will host 19 sports. There will be even more games for women. Right now, the Indian women’s team stands in 4th place in the leaderboard in the ICC Women’s Rankings. Australia is currently at the 1st position, South Africa at the second, and England is at third place.
The Birmingham 2022 competition schedule features more medal events for women than men for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, as well as a fully integrated para-sport programme.
A qualifying event is to take place by January 31, 2022, seven months after the main tournament with the participation of the winning team.
