- Draw: 6 points
- Any other result: 0 points
In addition, teams earn bonus points based on their performance in the first 100 overs of each team’s first innings:
- Batting bonus points: 1 point for reaching 150 runs, then 0.02 points for each run thereafter
- Bowling bonus points: 1 point for taking three wickets, then 1 point for each two wickets thereafter
History of CSA 4-Day Series
Like many other Commonwealth nations, the roots of cricket in South Africa can be traced back to the British colonial era in the early 19th Century. In March 1889, a momentous event unfolded as a touring English team faced off against a South African XI in two matches, now recognized as South Africa’s inaugural Test series.
The significance of domestic cricket was boosted when Sir Donald Currie, the founder of the Castle Shipping Line and sponsor of the 1889 English tour, generously donated a trophy known as the ‘Currie Cup’ to reward the champions of the burgeoning domestic competition. Initially, the Currie Cup was contested in a single-match format. As cricket continued to grow in popularity, the competition evolved to mirror the structure of England’s County Cricket system. Between 1892 and 1893, the format shifted to province-based contests, where teams competed in a champion format.
Throughout its history, the Currie Cup experienced various format changes, including knock-out rounds and round-robin followed by challenge finals against the previous year’s victor. However, in the 1906–07 season, the competition adopted a round-robin league format, which remained unchanged until the 1982–83 season.
