About Duleep Trophy

In its earlier years, the competition involved teams representing different geographical zones of India.

However, since the 2016-17 season, a new format has been adopted, where the teams are selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors. The tournament provides an excellent platform for talented cricketers to showcase their skills and compete at the first-class level.

As of the most recent update, South Zone holds the title as the current champions, having triumphed in the last edition of the Duleep Trophy. The competition remains an essential part of the Indian domestic cricket calendar, providing exciting contests and opportunities for emerging players to shine on the big stage.

Structure of Duleep Trophy

The usual five teams – the North, West, East, South, and Central Zones – were joined by a sixth, North-East Zone after the 2022/23 season. The Duleep Trophy will retain its zonal format where the tournament begins with a quarterfinal bracket. The teams will face each other in the tournament on a knock-out basis. There will be a total of five matches: two quarter-finals, two semi-finals, and the final.

History of Duleep Trophy

The Duleep Trophy, initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India during the 1961-62 season, is a prestigious cricket competition. It started with the participation of five Indian zonal teams – North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, and Central Zone. The inaugural tournament saw West Zone emerging victorious by defeating South Zone in the final with a convincing 10-wicket margin. In the early years, four out of the five teams had their bowling line-ups strengthened by including a West Indies Test cricketer during the 1962-63 season. Until the 2014-15 season, the competition followed a knock-out format, where the zonal teams competed against each other. However, from the 1993-94 season, the format shifted to a league-based system, providing more opportunities for teams to face each other. In the 2002-03 season, the zonal teams were replaced by five new teams – Elite A, Elite B, Elite C, Plate A, and Plate B. These teams were formed from the newly introduced Elite Group and Plate Group divisions of the Ranji Trophy. However, this format was short-lived as it was deemed that the new teams lacked identity. Subsequently, from 2003-04 until 2008, the original five zonal teams continued to compete, and an additional sixth team, usually a touring foreign team, participated as a guest team. The guest team feature was discontinued after 2008, and the competition reverted to the original five-team knockout format until the 2014-15 season.

In the 2015-16 season, the Duleep Trophy was not held, but it made a comeback in 2016-17 with a revised structure. The Board of Control for Cricket in India selected three teams – India Blue, India Green, and India Red – to participate in a round-robin tournament. The top two teams from the league phase advanced to the final, with India Blue claiming the trophy. This season also saw a change in the playing conditions, as all games were staged as day-night matches with a pink ball used.

In 2022-23, the competition returned to its original zonal format, with the five zonal teams being joined by a new team – the North East Zone cricket team – to add further excitement and competitiveness to the tournament.
