About European Cricket League

The clubs that are champions in domestic tournaments in their respective countries are allowed to participate in the ECL.

ECL board members Frank Leenders and Thomas Klooz both were a part of the TEAM marketing (TEAM event and media marketing) of the UEFA Champions League. Both of them played a significant role in the rebranding of the UEFA Champions League in its initial years. Thereon, Leenders became the managing director and a member of the Board of Directors while Klooz became the CEO of TEAM. 

European Cricket League Structure

When it comes to how it operates, T20 Blast has a distinct structure of its own. The event’s framework is broken out below, and it also applies to T20 Blast 2023:

• 30 ‘National Champions’ take part in 6 different groups across 6 weeks;
• The winners of the groups will join the defending champions in the Championship Week to determine the overall winner.

European Cricket League History

The league was incorporated in the year 2018. It was founded by Daniel Weston along with eight ICC member federations on board, namely Russia, Netherlands, France, Italy, Denmark, Romania, Spain and Germany. The inaugural season of the ECL took place in 2019 in La Manga Club, Spain with a total of 8 clubs participating. VOC Rotterdam claimed the silverware in the inaugural season, beating SG Findorff by 101 runs in the final. In the present date, the number of federations and eligible teams for future tournaments has increased. The 2020 edition of the competition took place in the same venue with 16 participants. However, it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2021 edition of the tournament also did not take place because of the surge of the virus. Till date, three seasons have taken place. 

European Cricket League Rules

The European Cricket League follows a T10 format where every team gets the opportunity to play 60 deliveries each. Hence, the competition has some rules of its own:

• A bowler can bowl a maximum of two overs;
• The powerplay(a period of the game where additional fielding restrictions come into existence) lasts for only three overs;
• Ties are broken by the use of Super Overs(If the tie still exists, more Super Overs must be played until a winner emerges).
