About Global T20 Canada
The inaugural edition of the competition took place in June and July 2018. The Global Twenty20 Canada is the first-ever major cricketing league in North America. There are six participating teams in the competition namely Mississauga Panthers, Toronto Nationals, Vancouver Knights, Brampton Wolves, Montreal Tigers, and Surrey Jaguars. The Surrey Jaguars and Mississauga Panthers will make their GT20 Canada debut this season, replacing Edmonton Royals and Winnipeg Hawks. The league is owned by Bombay Sports Limited. Thus far, two seasons of the tournament have been successfully completed(2018 & 2019) and the tournament is entering its third season in 2023.

Structure of Global T20 Canada
A total of 25 games is scheduled to take place across a period of 18 days. Every team will play at least 7 group stage matches and the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs. Each of the six franchises participating will have 16 players from full and associate nations, 2 international marquee players, 3 Canadian capped players and 3 emerging Canadian players.
History of Global T20 Canada
The Global T20 Canada league is the first fully sanctioned T20 league in the entire North America. The International Cricket Council(ICC) sanctioned the tournament in February 2018. The inaugural season of the Global T20 Canada was won by Vancouver Knights on 15 July 2018, beating Cricket West Indies B team by 7 wickets in the grand finale. The first season started on 28 July 2018 and concluded on 15 July 2018. The 2019 season of the competition held between 25 July 2019 to 11 August 2019 was won by Winnipeg Hawks, beating Vancouver Knights in the Super Over. The third season of the tournament which was scheduled to take place in 2020 was postponed to the following year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The competition was originally planned to be played at the CAA Centre, Brampton, Ontario, Canada but the venue was shifted to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia due to the Covid-19 restrictions in Canada. But then again, the 2021 season was also cancelled due to evolving concerns regarding COVID-19 and strict preventive measures taken by the Government of Malaysia to contain the spread of the pandemic. Finally, on 16 May 2023, Cricket Canada announced that the third edition of the tournament would be played from 20 July 2023 to 6 August 2023. All the games will be played at the Brampton Sports Park.

Global T20 Canada Teams

Brampton Wolves
Brampton Wolves can be deemed as one of the strongest sides in the 2023 season of the GT20 Canada. They will play their opening game against Mississauga Panthers on 20 July 2023 at the CAA Centre. Usman Khan, Max O’Dowd and Logan van Beek are some of the key players in their batting unit. All-rounders like Colin de Grandhomme, and Jan Frylinck are also expected to play key roles for the Wolves alongside Harbhajan Singh who has not played cricket of late but his addition to the squad will boost the Wolves to a great extent. NZ pacer Tim Southee’s presence will also help the squad.
Vancouver Knights
The winners of the inaugural season of the GT20 Canada, Vancouver Knights will play their opening game on 21st July. The Knights have a power-packed batting unit which includes the likes of Pakistani batsman Mohammad Rizwan, and Reeza Hendricks along with his South African teammate Rassie van der Dussen, Afghani batsman Najibullah Zadran and UAE batsman Vriitya Aravind will be some vital additions to the squad. Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq and Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann will lead the bowling unit.
Toronto Nationals
The Nationals who finished 3rd last season have the likes of legendary Shahid Afridi in their squad this year. Pakistan’s Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, New Zealand’s power-hitter Colin Munro and Namibia’s skipper Gerhard Erasmus will also be a part of the Nationals. JJ Smit, and Fazalhaq Farooqi are likely to take charge with the leather in hand.
Montreal Tigers
Montreal Tigers, led by Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan have one of the most balanced sides in the competition. They have two of the most explosive batters in the T20 circuit, Chris Lynn and Andre Russell. Sherfane Rutherford and Muhammad Waseem are also some of the vital additions to the squad. World-cup-winning all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite is also a part of the squad. The side finished 2nd last season and will surely look to improve on that.
Surrey Jaguars
The Surrey Jaguars, captained by Iftikhar Ahmed will make their GT20 Canada debut this season. Englishman Alex Hales and Bangladeshi batter Litton Das are likely to open the innings for the Jaguars. Jatinder Singh and Mohammad Harris are the other key additions to the squad. All-rounder Ben Cutting and Nepal’s very own Sandeep Lamichhane will be a vital cog for the Jaguars.
Mississauga Panthers
The Panthers, led by former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik will make their GT20 Canada debut this season. Legendary T20 batter Chris Gayle, and New Zealand’s James Neesham are the key assets for the Panthers. Indian pacer Jaskaran Singh and Pakistan’s Usman Qadir are the other key additions to the squad.
