About Hallyburton Johnstone Shield

The tournament began as a First-Class Competition back in the 1935-36 season and it is now a 50 overs cricket tournament. There are six participating provinces namely Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Wellington, Central Districts and Northern Districts. The tournament runs in parallel with the Women’s T20 Super Smash.

Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Structure

When it comes to how it operates, the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield has a distinct structure of its own. The event’s framework is broken out below:

  • Teams play in a group of six;
  • Hence, each team plays 10 games overall;
  • The sides securing the top two spots advance to the finals.

Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Points System

The teams are arranged based on the total points. Points are awarded as follows:

  • Win: 4 points;
  • Loss: 0 points;
  • Tie: 2 points;
  • No Result/Abandonment: 2 points;
  • Bonus Point: 1 point awarded for run rate in a match being 1.25x that of the opponent.

Hallyburton Johnstone Shield History

Wellington emerged as the first winner in the inaugural season of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield in 1935-36. Back then, both men and women played only long format and the competition began as a trophy won by direct challenge only. The tournament became a round robin format for the first time in the 1946-47 season. In recent decades, both the domestic tournaments are of white ball format, consisting of six teams.

Wellington Blaze

The Wellington Blaze represents the city of Wellington in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. They play their home games at the Basin Reserve. The side competes in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the Women’s Super Smash T20 competition. They are one of the most successful sides in the competition with 18 titles to their name(3rd most for any team). They have had their periods of dominance where they won the Shield five times in the 1950s and another five times in the 1970s. 

Canterbury Magicians

The Canterbury Magicians represent the region of Canterbury in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. They play their home games at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The side competes in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the Women’s Super Smash T20 competition. They are the most successful side in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield with 39 title wins. Canterbury became a dominant force from the 1978-79 season. They won the next 20 out of 21 seasons, missing out only in the 1989-90 season where they came second.

Central Hinds

The Central Hinds represent the region of central New Zealand in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. They play their home games at various venues namely Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North, Saxton Oval, Nelson and other CDCA home venues. The side competes in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the Women’s Super Smash T20 competition. They made their Hallyburton Johnstone Shield in the 1979-80 season. They won their first title in the 2005-06 season and went on to win the competition two times more. 

Auckland Hearts

The Auckland Hearts represents the region of Auckland in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. The side plays their home game at the Eden Park Outer Oval. They played their first Hallyburton Johnstone Shield game in 1935-36 vs Wellington. They won their first title four years later. They went on to win the competition 19 times more, including three times in a row between 1946-47 and 1948-50 and four times in a row between 1999-00 and 2002-03.

Otago Sparks

The Auckland Hearts represents the region of Otago and the surrounding area in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. They play their home games at the University Oval, Dunedin. Otago first appeared in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield back in the 1939-40 season, winning their first title in the 1962-63 season. They did not feature in the competition between 1983-84 to 1997-98 and returned to the competition in the 1998-99 season. They have three Hallyburton Johnstone Shield titles to date with the most recent one being in 2021-22.

Northern Districts

The Northern Districts, previously known as Northern Spirits, represent the Northern half of New Zealand’s North Island in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. They play their home games at Seddon Park, Hamilton. The side joined New Zealand’s women’s domestic structure for the first time in the 1999-00 season. They have been one of the poorest performers in the competition. They are the only side who are yet to win the Women’s T20 Super Smash.
