About Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy
Its inception dates back to 2013 when the tournament featured three teams. Subsequently, in 2017, the excitement surged as a fourth province, Munster Reds, joined the competition.
This season marks the eleventh edition of the tournament overall and the sixth edition since it gained official Twenty20 status. The games are played as a series of three-day festivals, showcasing the skills and talent of the four teams. Currently, Leinster Lightning holds the coveted title of defending champions, securing their seventh victory in 2022 and solidifying their status as the most successful team in the cricket tournament’s history.

Structure of Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy
The tournament adopts a triple round-robin format, wherein each team competes against every other team three times during the event. Remarkably, these matches are played at distinct venues: one at each team’s home ground, another at the opponent’s home ground, and the third at a neutral venue. With a total of 18 matches spread across three months, the tournament maintains a steady pace, scheduling three matches each month.
In the ongoing 2023 season, 12 matches have already taken place, and there remain six more thrilling encounters to be held in the month of August. Unlike some other tournaments that incorporate group stages and knockout stages, this event’s fixtures are prearranged, ensuring every team has an equal opportunity to face each other multiple times.
To determine the ultimate champion, points accumulated throughout the tournament play a crucial role. The team that amasses the most points by the tournament’s conclusion is rightfully crowned as the winner.
History of Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy
Ireland left an indelible mark on the international cricket scene, particularly in the World Cup, where they achieved notable victories over strong teams like England, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Inspired by these successes, Cricket Ireland set its sights on securing Test match status from the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, they faced challenges, including a lack of adequate infrastructure for hosting first-class cricket matches and other necessary resources.
In January 2012, Cricket Ireland unveiled their ambitious plan called ‘Vision 2020,’ which aimed to establish first-class infrastructure in Ireland by 2015 and attain Test match status by 2020. As part of this vision, they also established a cricket academy to identify and nurture homegrown talent, preventing promising players from seeking better prospects in England.
To support their plans, Cricket Ireland successfully secured a funding grant of $1.5 million from the ICC in December 2012. This financial backing enabled them to conduct elite domestic competitions in the country, further strengthening the foundation for Ireland’s cricketing aspirations.

The Leinster Lightning is a prominent first-class team participating in the Inter-Provincial Cup. Northern Knights
The Northern Knights are a highly regarded first-class provincial cricket team in Ireland, representing the Northern Cricket Union of Ireland, which covers a significant portion of eastern and southern Ulster, along with parts of western Ulster. Despite having been around since the beginning of the tournament, the Northern Knights have seen limited success in terms of titles. Their triumph came in the 2019 season and they have had to settle for the runners-up position on four occasions throughout the tournament’s history.
North West Warriors
The North West Warriors are a first-class provincial cricket team representing the western region of Ulster, which encompasses areas from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Managed by the North West of Ireland Cricket Union, they have been competing fiercely in the series since its inception in 2013, having won two titles in 2014 and 2021 and earned the runners-up position three times.
Munster Reds
Munster Reds, an inter-provincial cricket team hailing from Cork, represents the province of Munster in Ireland. In April 2017, Cricket Ireland approved their participation in the prestigious Interprovincial Twenty20 Cup. Making their debut in the Inter-Provincial Trophy in 2017, Munster Reds achieved their first victory against North West Warriors on 6th July 2018. While they are still pursuing their elusive championship victory, they showcased their potential by securing the runners-up position in the last season.
