History of Lanka Premier League
Originally scheduled to take place from 18 August to 10 September 2018, the first season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) encountered several delays due to administrative issues within Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). However, amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SLC announced a new start date of 28 August 2020 for the tournament. The league garnered significant interest, attracting 70 overseas players keen on participating in the competition. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic continued to impose restrictions and logistical challenges, leading to further rescheduling of the inaugural season. Eventually, the first season commenced on 26 November 2020. Notably, a player draft was conducted to allocate players to the respective teams. During this time, the rights holder of the tournament, the Innovative Production Group, faced uncertainties due to the prevailing economic situation. Despite their initial hesitance, the tournament proceeded as planned, and all three seasons have been successfully completed.
