Originally a knockout, it now employs a single round-robin and a finals series. Teams from the six Australian states vie for the title, also competing in the Sheffield Shield. Structure of Marsh One-Day Cup
The Marsh One-Day Cup competition adopts a single round-robin structure, with all teams facing each other in the league phase. The two top-performing teams in the standings advance to the final, where the winner is determined based on accumulated points. The finalist that secured the highest position in the league enjoys the advantage of playing on their home field. In the event of a tie during the final, the champion is decided using the regular season’s bonus point system. The team that emerges victorious in this thrilling contest is awarded the prestigious Marsh One Day Cup trophy.
Points are allocated as follows: a win earns 4 points, a no-result or a tie grants 2 points, and a loss results in 0 points. Bonus points are given if a team achieves a run rate 1.25 times higher than the opposition, in which case they receive 1 bonus point. Moreover, if a team achieves a run rate twice as high as the opposition, they are awarded 2 bonus points.
History of Marsh One Day Cup
In 1963, England pioneered the domestic one-day limited-overs cricket competition with the Gillette Cup. Following suit, Australia introduced its version in 1969-70, held annually since then, with various names and formats. This cricket tournament holds List A status, and it was a trailblazer as the first List A competition to feature player’s shirt numbers in the 1995-96 season. The concept of numbers on shirts extended to the ODI series later that season. In 2017, Jason Gillespie, the former Australian Test cricketer, proposed the inclusion of Papua New Guinea in the competition, reflecting its growing recognition and potential.
