About Masters Champions League
Initially, the MCL had ambitious plans, as it obtained approval for 10 seasons from the Emirates Cricket Board. However, before its first season commenced, it encountered challenges concerning the eligibility of “retired” international players who still had active contracts with other domestic competitions. Unfortunately, after its inaugural season, the league faced insurmountable difficulties and had to cease its operations.
One of the major issues the MCL encountered was delays in player payments, which almost resulted in players abandoning the tournament midway through the season.
The tournament took place from January 28, 2016, to February 13, 2016 in Dubai and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Structure of Masters Champions League
The Masters Champions League followed a traditional round-robin format, where each team competed against all the other teams once during the league stage of the tournament. In total, the league stage consisted of 15 matches, leaving three matches for the playoffs. The playoffs featured the top four teams, and the semi-finals were held to determine the finalists. The ultimate showdown in the tournament was the final, contested by the winners of each semi-final.
History of Masters Champions League
In June 2015, the league’s CEO, Zafar Shah, made the official announcement of the tournament. The Masters Champions League garnered significant support in the United Arab Emirates, and it received official approval from the Emirates Cricket Board. The league operated under the Grand Midwest Group. The MCL governing body comprised several key members, including the Chief Operating Officer, Sean Morris (COO), and President Abdul Rahman Falaknaz. In addition to them, there were six others, among them were former international cricketers Allan Border and Graham Gooch.
It comprised six teams, each consisting of fifteen former international cricketers. In an exciting final match, the Gemini Arabians emerged victorious, defeating the Leo Lions by 16 runs in the only edition of the tournament.

The Masters Champions League concluded after its inaugural edition, here is the winner and runners-up from the season:
Season | Winner | Runner Up |

2016 | Gemini Arabians | Leo Lions |
Masters Champions League Teams
Gemini Arabians
The Gemini Arabians made history as the inaugural and sole champions of the Masters Champions League. They won all five matches they participated in during the league stage. They secured their victory by defeating the Leo Lions in an intense final, prevailing by a margin of 16 runs. Led by the former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, the team showcased an impressive roster of cricket legends, featuring names like Kumar Sangakkara and Muthiah Muralidaran.
Leo Lions
The Leo Lions claimed the runners-up position in the Masters Champions League. They displayed a strong performance throughout the tournament, securing the second spot in the league stage with three victories out of five matches. The team was skillfully led by former Trinidadian international cricketer Brian Lara. Alongside him, the squad boasted notable talents such as Brendon Taylor, James Franklin, and Scott Styris.
Libra Legends
The Libra Legends experienced a challenging run in the tournament, ending up as the least successful team. Throughout the competition, they were unable to secure any victories in the five matches they participated in, concluding the season with zero points. The team was captained by the renowned Jacques Kallis, and their lineup featured players like Sean Ervine, Ian Butler, and Tim Ambrose, among others.
Sagittarius Strikers
The Sagittarius Strikers secured a spot in the semi-finals by finishing in fourth place during the league stage with two wins out of five matches played. Unfortunately, their journey came to an end in the semi-final when they faced the formidable Gemini Arabians, who ultimately clinched the championship. The Strikers put up a tough fight but narrowly lost the match by a mere ten runs. The team was skillfully led by former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist and featured notable players like Mahela Jayawardene, Imran Farhat, and Jonathan Trott, among others.
Virgo Super Kings
The Virgo Super Kings secured the third position in the overall standings, coming close to reaching the finals. Their impressive performance in the league stage, with three victories out of five games, earned them a spot in the semi-finals. However, their journey was halted by the resilient Leo Lions, who eventually became the runners-up in the tournament. The Super Kings faced a tough defeat, falling short by 17 runs.
Led by Graeme Smith, the Super Kings boasted one of the most illustrious squads in the competition. Alongside the captain, the team featured notable players such as James Foster, Brett Lee, Murali Kartik, and Malinga Bandara, adding depth and skill to their lineup.
Capricorn Commanders
The Capricorn Commanders concluded the group stage in the penultimate position, unfortunately missing out on the playoffs. They achieved two victories out of five matches, the same as the Sagittarius Strikers, but their lower net run rate hindered their qualification for the semi-finals. The team was under the captaincy of Abdul Razzaq, a former cricketer and current Pakistan cricket coach. The Commanders boasted a talented lineup, including renowned players like Andrew Symonds, Saleem Elahi, Jeetan Patel, and Geraint Jones.
