About Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy
It’s named after a former England captain, Rachael Heyhoe Flint, who passed away in 2017. The first tournament was held in August and September 2020, and the Southern Vipers won the final against the Northern Diamonds. At first, it was meant to be a one-time event, but in February 2021, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to make it a regular part of the women’s domestic cricket in England, alongside the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

Structure of Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy
In the 2020 season, the teams were split into a North and South Group. Each team played six group stage matches, twice against every other team in their group. The top teams from each group faced off in the final match to decide the winner.
In the next two seasons, the format changed slightly. All eight teams played against each other once in a round-robin style. After that, the second and third-ranked teams competed in a playoff match, and the winner of that match got to play in the final against the team that finished first in the standings. For the 2023 season, the teams will play each other twice – once at home and once away – in a double round-robin format. Each team can earn 4 points for a victory, and they can get a bonus point if their run rate (the pace at which they score) is 1.25 times greater than their opponents. If there is a tie in the standings, several tiebreakers are used to determine the final rankings. The tiebreakers are applied in this order:
- Highest net run rate;
- The team that scored the most points in matches involving the tied teams;
- Better bowling strike rate;
- A drawing of lots, essentially leaving it to chance.
History of Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy
In 2018, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed plans for a new cricket competition called The Hundred, set to start in 2020. This new tournament would replace the existing Women’s Cricket Super League (WCSL). In addition, the ECB planned to create a fresh “regional elite domestic structure for women’s cricket,” offering 40 new full-time professional contracts to non-England players. However, these proposals were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the pandemic, the launch of The Hundred was postponed. Nevertheless, the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy was introduced in August 2020, with six new teams joining two teams carried over from the WCSL, Western Storm, and Southern Vipers. The trophy was named in honour of former England player Rachael Heyhoe Flint and was initially meant to be a one-time event due to the pandemic. The Southern Vipers emerged as the first champions, defeating the Northern Diamonds in the final.
Looking forward to the 2023 season, exciting news emerged that the tournament was expanding. Teams were now scheduled to play against each other both at home and away, making the competition even more engaging and competitive.
