Structure of SA20 T20 League
In a double round-robin home-and-away format, each team will face the other five teams twice. The top-seeded team will face the fourth-placed team in the first semi-final following the conclusion of the league season. In the opposite semi-final, the teams that finished second and third will face off. A win earned 4 points for a team, and a draw would award 2 points to both sides. 1 additional point for a win with a run rate difference of 1.25 times.
History of SA20 T20 League
Cricket South Africa (CSA) ventured into the world of franchise T20 cricket in 2017 by establishing the T20 Global League. However, the inaugural season faced setbacks, as it was postponed by a year due to the absence of a broadcast deal and title sponsor. Eventually, in June 2018, CSA replaced the T20 Global League with the Mzansi Super League (MSL), featuring six teams owned by the cricket board itself. Regrettably, both these leagues struggled to find success.
The Mzansi Super League managed to run for just two seasons, with the 2020 and 2021 editions being cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, further dampening its prospects. In 2022, Cricket South Africa made another attempt to create a successful T20 tournament, introducing the SA20. They formed a new entity named Africa Cricket Development (Pty) Limited (ACD) to oversee the league. CSA became the majority stakeholder in ACD, holding 50% of the shares, while broadcaster SuperSport acquired a 30% share. The remaining 20% ownership went to Sundar Raman, the former Chief Operating Officer of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Interestingly, all six teams participating in SA20 were acquired by franchises from the renowned Indian Premier League (IPL), further enhancing the league’s allure and potential. In August 2022, Graeme Smith was appointed as the commissioner for the tournament, adding a touch of cricketing expertise to the management.
