Structure of Super Smash

What makes the tournament fun is its Double Round Robin format between six teams. Each team plays a total of ten matches where they score points per win or draw. The team with the highest points advances directly to the tournament finals. The teams coming second and third in the points table compete against each other in an eliminator to advance to the final round.

History of Super Smash

The New Zealand Cricket Board organizes the annual Super Smash Fantasy Cricket League (Dream11). The inaugural edition was claimed by Canterbury Kings at Eden Park Outer Oval, Auckland. Initially a men’s domestic professional tournament from 2005-06, it expanded to include women’s cricket from 2018-19. It’s now known as Super Smash Fantasy Cricket League 2022-23 (Dream11).

Super Smash Teams

Super Smash consists of the same teams that take part in the domestic cricket arena of New Zealand.

Auckland

Representing the Auckland region, the Auckland cricket team is among the six New Zealand domestic first-class cricket teams. Under the governance of the Auckland Cricket Association, they have secured the trophy 4 times and finished as runners-up on as many occasions. Their last title victory came in the 2005/06 season. The Auckland Aces, their limited-overs side, don a predominantly light blue kit with navy and white trim, and they play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval. Some of the prominent names in the squad are – Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Colin Munro, Lockie Ferguson, and Martin Guptill.

Wellington

The Wellington Firebirds are one of New Zealand Cricket’s six men’s first-class teams, based in Wellington. They are also among the most successful teams in the competition with 4 title wins. They won the 2019/20 & 2020/21 seasons consecutively.  Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, and Tom Blundell also featured for Wellington in the previous season of the competition.

Canterbury

Hailing from Canterbury, New Zealand, the Canterbury first-class cricket team is one of the six competing teams in senior New Zealand Cricket competitions. The team has been very unfortunate, winning the title once but reaching the finals on five occasions, only to lose the game. They were the runner-up in the past three seasons of the Super Smash. Chad Bowes, Daryl Mitchell, and Tom Latham are a few of the prominent names in the team.

Otago

Known as the Volts since 1997–98, the Otago cricket team has represented New Zealand in representative cricket since 1864. Covering the Otago, Southland, and North Otago regions in the South Island, they primarily play at the University Oval in Dunedin, occasionally using other venues too. Though they have only 2 title wins, they remain a formidable force. A few of their key players from last season are – Nick Kelly, Hamish Rutherford, and Dale Phillips.

Central Districts

Formerly known as Central Districts, the Central Stags are the representative team for central New Zealand. They compete in the Plunket Shield, The Super Smash, and the Men’s Super Smash Twenty20 competitions. They have three titles to their name. Dane Cleaver, Adam Milne, Ross Taylor, and Will Young also featured for Central Districts in the previous season.

Northern Districts

Representing the northern half of New Zealand’s North Island (excluding Auckland), the Northern Districts men’s cricket team has clinched the championship four times, including the previous season of the Super Smash. Jeet Raval, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, and Kane Williamson are a few of the renowned names in the team.
