About Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
It was introduced back in 2006-07 with the name “Inter-State T20 Championship. It was renamed to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy three years later in honour of the Indian Test cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) controls and organises the tournament every year where the teams compete in a 20 over game across several venues in the country.
Structure of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
As per latest format, the 38 teams are grouped into five Elite Groups, namely A, B, C, D & E. Three of these groups consist of eight teams whereas the remaining two will have seven teams. Every team will play against every other team in their pool. The 2nd ranked teams from each group will compete further in the preliminary round to move into the quarter finals where the table toppers reach directly. The winners then proceed to the semis and finals respectively in a knockout fashion to arrive at the winners of the tournament.
History of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
The BCCI launched this premier domestic T-20 tournament with a structure in 2006-07 season, in which 27 Ranji teams divided in five Zones with the name of Inter-State T20 Championship (later relaunched as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy). After 9 new teams were included into the domestic structure in the 2018-19 season, the zonal system was abolished and teams were drawn into five groups with group winners and runners up competing further to win the championship. In the past ten years, Karnataka (2018/19, 2019/20) & Tamil Nadu (2020/21, 2021/22) won the tournament twice.
