About World Test Championship
Originally, the competition was planned to replace the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in 2009, but those plans were abandoned. Subsequently, it was rescheduled for June 2017. In October 2017, the ICC announced a new Test league agreed upon by its members, involving the top nine teams playing a series over two years. The top two teams at the end of the league would qualify for the World Test League Championship Final, which would be considered an ICC event. While the league games of the ICC World Test Championship were not treated as ICC events, the broadcasting rights were held by the host nation’s cricketing board rather than the ICC. In contrast, the WTC finals were recognized as ICC events.
The first ICC World Test Championship commenced with the 2019 Ashes series and culminated with New Zealand triumphing in the final by defeating India in June 2021. Following that, the second ICC World Test Championship began on August 4, 2021, with the Pataudi Trophy series and concluded with Australia clinching the trophy after beating India in the final in June 2023.

Structure of World Test Championship
The tournament follows the traditional Test format, where each of the nine participating teams engaged in two to four-match series against one another. A round-robin stage was included, ensuring that all teams faced each other during the competition. For those teams that qualified, playoffs were organised, ultimately leading to a final showdown between the top two teams.
In total, the World Test Championship consisted of approximately 70 matches, making it a comprehensive and engaging series for the nine test-playing teams involved.
History of World Test Championship
The concept of this championship was initially proposed in 2009 when the ICC engaged with the MCC to discuss the idea of a Test match championship. After deliberation at the ICC Chief Executives’ meeting in April 2012, it was decided that the ICC Champions Trophy would be the last of its kind in 2013, paving the way for the inaugural Test Championship play-offs scheduled for June 2017. However, plans changed, and in January 2014, the 2017 ICC World Test Championship was cancelled, leading to the reinstatement of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
The first tournament eventually kicked off with the 2019 Ashes series, but in March 2020, matches were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Play resumed in July 2020, though several rounds of matches were postponed or cancelled. New Zealand became the first team to qualify for the final when it was confirmed that the series between South Africa and Australia would not proceed. India later joined them in the final. Despite interruptions from rain during the opening and fourth day of the final, New Zealand emerged victorious in the final session of the reserve day, lifting the inaugural World Test Championship trophy.
The next cycle, WTC 2021–23, commenced in August 2021 with the Pataudi Trophy, a five-match series between India and England. The International Cricket Council officially announced the full program with a new points system. Following that, the WTC 2023–25 cycle started with the 1st Ashes Test on June 16, 2023. The International Cricket Council also confirmed that the WTC final would take place at Lord’s in the summer of 2025.
