Structure of Ford Trophy
In the Ford Trophy, the six teams compete in a single group, playing ten games in a double round-robin format. The team leading the standings advances to the finals, while the second and third teams face off in the preliminary final. The ultimate climax is the winner-takes-all Ford Trophy Grand Final, where the top two teams battle for the championship title.
History of Ford Trophy
Since its inception in 1971/72, the competition has seen various sponsors with naming rights. In 2011, New Zealand Cricket partnered with Ford Motor Company, leading to the tournament’s current name, the Ford Trophy. The format has evolved over the years. Initially, from 1971–72 to 1979–80, it followed a knock-out structure with preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and a final. From 1980–81 to 1984–85, a league format was adopted, with all six teams facing each other once, and the top two contending for the title in a final match. From 1985–86 to 1988–89, the team leading the league after a single round-robin was declared champion. Semi-finals and finals were reintroduced from 1989 to 1990 onwards. From 1993–94, teams played a home-and-away league format (10 matches). Since the 2009/10 season, the teams play each other once (five games), followed by three randomly selected teams a second time, creating an eight-game round-robin phase. The format changes have shaped the exciting and competitive history of the Ford Trophy.

Ford Trophy Teams

Auckland
Representing the Auckland region, the Auckland cricket team is among the six New Zealand domestic first-class cricket teams. Under the governance of the Auckland Cricket Association, they have secured the trophy 13 times. The Auckland Aces, their limited-overs side, don a predominantly light blue kit with navy and white trim, and they play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval.
Wellington
The Wellington Firebirds are one of New Zealand Cricket’s six men’s first-class teams, based in Wellington. With 8 title victories, they are formidable contenders in the Ford Trophy.
Canterbury
Hailing from Canterbury, New Zealand, the Canterbury first-class cricket team is one of the six competing teams in senior New Zealand Cricket competitions. With 15 title wins, they stand as the second most successful domestic team in New Zealand history.
Otago
Known as the Volts since 1997–98, the Otago cricket team has represented New Zealand in representative cricket since 1864. Covering the Otago, Southland, and North Otago regions in the South Island, they primarily play at the University Oval in Dunedin, occasionally using other venues too. Though they have only 2 title wins, they remain a formidable force.
Central Districts
Formerly known as Central Districts, the Central Stags are the representative team for central New Zealand. They compete in the Plunket Shield, The Ford Trophy, and the Men’s Super Smash Twenty20 competition. Reigning champions, they secured victory in the 2022/23 season by defeating Canterbury in the finals by 6 wickets.
Northern Districts
Representing the northern half of New Zealand’s North Island (excluding Auckland), the Northern Districts men’s cricket team has clinched the championship seven times, despite being the least successful team in the league.
