About Vijay Hazare Trophy
The same teams from the Ranji Trophy participate in the 50 over games over a span of a month. The tournament began in 2002 and was named after the legendary Indian cricketer Vijay Hazare. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organises the tournament every year where the regional teams and the ones representing government organisations take part. Tamil Nadu is the most successful team in the cricket tournament, winning the trophy on five occasions.

Structure of Vijay Hazare Trophy
The 38 participating teams are grouped into five Elite Groups. The teams play a game against every other team in the group and the table toppers are directly promoted to the quarter finals. The other three will be decided in the pre-quarterfinals played between the 2nd position holders of the group. The knockout stage starts with pre-quarterfinals followed by quarterfinals and semifinals. The best two teams then play in finals to decide the year’s champions.
History of Vijay Hazare Trophy
From the tournament’s inaugural edition during the 1993–94 season through to the 2001–02 season, no finals were held. The teams competed within their zones, with no overall winner announced. During the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons, a final round-robin stage was held for the top teams in each zone. A play-off format including semi-finals and final was declared in the 2004/05 season and has been the same since. The tournament was named after the late twentieth century Indian cricketer, Vijay Hazare. Hazare led India in their first Test victory and was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions in the field of cricket. The tournament has witnessed its twenty seasons, with Tamil Nadu winning it the most (5). However, Mumbai has had the most success in the past ten years. The team won the title twice whereas Karnataka stood second on four occasions.
