Structure of Women’s Super Smash
In the Women’s Super Smash, a captivating double round-robin format is adopted, wherein every team competes twice against all the other participating teams in the tournament. This league stage comprises a total of 30 matches. The team that secures the top position in the standings at this stage earns a direct entry to the final match. As for the teams placed second and third, they engage in a semi-final showdown to determine the finalist who will vie for the ultimate victory.
History of Women’s Super Smash
The Women’s Super Smash originated back in the 2007-08 season under the name “State League Twenty20.” During that inaugural season, teams faced each other once, and the ultimate champion emerged as the winner of the tournament, with the Canterbury Magicians claiming victory.
In the following season, the format remained the same, but the competition was rebranded as the “New Zealand Cricket Women’s Twenty20,” and it was the Central Hinds who clinched their first title. Over the years, the tournament underwent several name changes. It was rebranded as the “Action Cricket Twenty20” and later renamed as the “New Zealand Women’s Twenty20” competition. Subsequently, in the 2018-19 season, it took on the title “Burger King Women’s Super Smash.” Finally, in the 2019-20 season, the tournament secured sponsorship from Dream11, leading to its current name, “Dream11 Super Smash.”
The Wellington Blaze showcased their dominance and prowess by securing an impressive three consecutive titles from 2017-18 to 2019-20. However, in the following season of 2020-21, Canterbury managed to overcome them in a thrilling final match. Undeterred, Wellington Blaze made a triumphant comeback in the 2021-22 season, displaying an unbeaten performance in the group stage and eventually emerging victorious in the final against Otago.
The competition remained intense in the 2022-23 season, with Canterbury rising to the occasion and clinching their sixth title. They defeated Wellington Blaze in an enthralling final after finishing third in the group stage.
