Structure of Women’s T20 Blaze
The Women’s T20 Blaze adopts an engaging round-robin format, featuring all participating teams competing against one another throughout the tournament. In total, there are 15 enthralling matches played during the event. Diverging from conventional tournaments, the T20 Blaze skips the knockout stage or playoffs. Instead, the fixture list is predetermined, and the team that accumulates the most wins by the conclusion of the tournament claims the coveted title.
History of Women’s T20 Blaze
In 2012, the tournament made its debut under the name “West Indies Cricket Board Regional Women’s Twenty20 Championship.” Featuring eight teams in a round-robin format, it culminated in an exciting final, along with play-offs for 3rd, 5th, and 7th place. Jamaica emerged victorious in the inaugural edition, defeating Trinidad and Tobago in the final, with the talented captain Stafanie Taylor named Player of the Tournament. The following year, in 2013, the tournament underwent a format change, with the eight teams split into two groups of four. The top two from each group advanced to the semi-finals, and once again, Jamaica triumphed, securing their second title by defeating Barbados in the final.
However, there was a hiatus, and the tournament returned in 2016 with a reduced number of teams, six in total. The Leeward Islands and Windward Islands joined the competition, representing their respective nations. The teams competed in two groups of three, with the winners of each group facing off in the final. Trinidad and Tobago emerged victorious, beating Jamaica in an intense showdown. In 2018, the six teams battled it out in a round-robin group, and Barbados emerged as champions by finishing atop the group standings.
The tournament was then slated for the 2018-19 season, taking place in March and April 2019, and was rebranded as the “Twenty20 Blaze.” The format remained the same, and Barbados secured their second title, once again demonstrating their prowess. Unfortunately, the tournaments scheduled for 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the most recent champion, Barbados, qualifying for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Finally, in June 2022, the Twenty20 Blaze made its much-awaited return, and Jamaica claimed their third title in a thrilling competition. The momentum carried into 2023 when Barbados clinched the championship, edging out Guyana based on a head-to-head record to secure their third title overall.
