Structure of Women’s T20 Challenge
In the Women’s T20 Challenge, the tournament adopts a round-robin format where every team competes against all the others. Across the event, four matches are played, with three being allocated to the group stage. During this stage, each of the three teams participates in two matches. Subsequently, the two highest-performing teams from the group stage advance to the final showdown.
History of Women’s T20 Challenge
Following the Indian women’s national cricket team’s impressive second-place finish in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, there arose a suggestion for a women’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Consequently, in 2018, the Women’s T20 Challenge came into being, with its inaugural edition featuring a single match between IPL Supernovas and IPL Trailblazers. The subsequent season witnessed the addition of a new team, IPL Velocity, and a shift to a round-robin format.
The 2020 edition had to be postponed due to the pandemic and eventually took place in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, concurrently with the men’s Indian Premier League. In November 2022, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), proposed expanding the Women’s T20 Challenge to include seven or eight teams by 2022. While discussions were ongoing about introducing a fourth team, the 2021 edition couldn’t be held due to the COVID-19 situation, and scheduling conflicts with India women’s tour of Australia prevented it from coinciding with the men’s IPL.
In March 2022, the BCCI announced its plans to launch a women’s IPL by 2023, with a larger number of teams making their debut in the inaugural season. Consequently, the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge occurred alongside the men’s IPL playoffs, bringing the tournament to a close. The subsequent year, in 2023, the Women’s Premier League was introduced, marking a significant step forward in women’s cricket.

Women’s T20 Challenge Teams
IPL Supernovas
Founded in 2018 as an Indian cricket team, the IPL Supernovas were specifically created to participate in the Women’s T20 Challenge. Throughout the tournament’s existence until its conclusion in 2022, they remained a dominant presence. The Supernovas claimed the title three times, emerging victorious in 2018, 2019, and 2022.
Initiated in 2018 for the inaugural Women’s T20 Challenge, the Supernovas engaged in a single match against the Trailblazers. This event was considered a response to the men’s Indian Premier League, with hopes of paving the way for a full-fledged women’s tournament in the future. The side was led by Indian batter Harmanpreet Kaur, supported by fellow Indians Mithali Raj and Veda Krishnamurthy, along with overseas players Danni Wyatt, Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning, and Megan Schutt. The Supernovas earned the prestigious title of champions in the inaugural Women’s T20 Challenge.
IPL Trailblazers
Established in 2018 as an Indian cricket team, the IPL Trailblazers entered the Women’s T20 Challenge and continued to participate until the tournament’s conclusion in 2022. They achieved victory once in the competition, securing a thrilling win against Supernovas in the final of the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge by 16 runs.
The 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually commencing in November. In their initial game, the Trailblazers showcased exceptional bowling prowess, restricting Velocity to a mere 47 runs, courtesy of overseas bowler Sophie Ecclestone’s remarkable figures of 4 wickets for 9 runs. Trailblazers efficiently chased down the target in just 7.5 overs. Their second match against Supernovas proved to be a closely fought contest, with Supernovas setting a target of 146. Deepti Sharma’s unbeaten 43 runs fueled the Trailblazers’ chase, falling just two runs short of victory.
However, thanks to a favorable Net Run Rate, Trailblazers qualified for the final, where they faced Supernovas once more. Batting first, Mandhana played a sensational knock of 68 runs, guiding her team to a total of 118. The Trailblazers’ bowlers, especially Jhulan Goswami, Deepti Sharma, and Salma Khatun, exhibited impeccable skills, restricting Supernovas to 102 runs and ultimately leading the Trailblazers to their maiden T20 Challenge title.
IPL Velocity
IPL Velocity, an Indian women’s cricket team, was established in 2019 to participate in the Women’s T20 Challenge, and they remained in the competition until its conclusion in 2022. While showing strong performances, they reached the final of the tournament twice, in 2019 and 2022, yet faced defeat on both occasions.
Initially captained by Mithali Raj, the team included overseas players such as Hayley Matthews, Danni Wyatt, and Amelia Kerr. In their debut match, Velocity secured a thrilling 3-wicket victory against Trailblazers, with Wyatt shining with a top score of 46 runs, supported by Ekta Bisht and Amelia Kerr, who both claimed two wickets each. However, they couldn’t maintain the winning streak in their second match against Supernovas, losing by 12 runs, despite Wyatt’s 43 runs and an unbeaten 40 by Mithali Raj.
In the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge held in May, Deepti Sharma took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj. Velocity began the tournament with a triumph over Supernovas, led by notable performances from Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt, both scoring half-centuries. Although they faced a defeat against the Trailblazers in their second match, they managed to limit the damage to their Net Run Rate, allowing them to secure a spot in the final. In the title clash against Supernovas, chasing a target of 166, Velocity fell just four runs short despite an impressive unbeaten knock of 65 by Laura Wolvaardt.
